Game day

Game Day Snacks That Are Not Wings

Four hours in front of a screen needs food you can eat with one hand and keep eating. Smoked fish does that better than anything in a bowl

Why jerky beats a bowl

Chips are gone by the second quarter. Wings need plates, napkins and a trip to the kitchen. Neither survives a close game

Dried fish solves the problem the way it has been solved everywhere else in the world: one hand, no plate, no grease, and it lasts as long as the game does

The default

Salty Bites (Trout Jerky)

If you buy one thing from this page, buy this. Salty, chewy, and impossible to stop eating — which is the entire point when there are four hours to fill

$35

Cheapest per hour

Smelt (Dried Salted Koryushka)

Small, salty, and they take a while to get through. That is exactly what you want from a snack you are eating without looking at it

$30

For the table

Haliwood Straws (Halibut)

Light, mild and easy to share — the one that gets passed around rather than guarded. Good for a room where not everyone is a fish person yet

$30

For the whole season

A little bit of Everything

If you host every week, buying by the piece stops making sense. This covers several games and saves you thinking about it again until the playoffs

$199

Two things worth doing

  • Put it out before kickoff, not at halftime. Twenty minutes at room temperature is what wakes the flavour up, and nobody wants to be in the kitchen when something is happening
  • Buy more than one kind. Four hours of the same texture gets boring, however good it is. Two or three is the sweet spot

Stock up before kickoff

Order early in the week and it will be in the fridge by Sunday

Common questions

Will it arrive before the weekend?

Order Monday to Wednesday and it goes out that week. We do not ship Thursday or Friday, because a package would sit in a depot until Monday — so plan a few days ahead for a Sunday game

Does it go with beer?

That is most of the reason it exists. Salt makes you thirsty, and the umami sits alongside malt rather than fighting it — we wrote a whole guide on which fish goes with which beer

Is it messy?

No. That is the advantage over wings — no sauce, no bones to deal with, nothing that needs a plate. Just a napkin
